Remembering: Mrs Anna Irons

A much-loved figure behind one of Ballymena’s most cherished family businesses has sadly passed away.

Irons Home Bakery, a longstanding institution in the town, announced the death of Mrs Anna Irons on Sunday morning, 26 October.

In a heartfelt statement, the bakery said:

“Due to the passing of Mrs Anna Irons this morning, Irons Home Bakery will be closed until Wednesday as a mark of respect.

“We aim to reopen on Thursday but we will update this page as soon as possible once arrangements are in place.

“Thank you for your understanding at this time.”

Established over 50 years ago by Mr W.J. Irons, the bakery has been a hallmark of family enterprise and community spirit in Harryville and across Ballymena.

As is often said, “behind every good man there is a good woman” — and those who knew the Irons family often speak of Anna’s unwavering strength, love, and support throughout her husband’s journey as a local baker.

After serving his time as a baker in Belfast, and later in Morton and Simpson’s in Ballymena, Mr Irons founded the bakery close to where the family lived — with Anna by his side every step of the way.

Today, the business remains proudly family-run, under the care of their daughter Peggy Eaton and granddaughter Rachel, with another granddaughter, Rebecca, also helping out.

Known far beyond Ballymena for their famous sausage rolls and iced coconut cream fingers, Irons Home Bakery has built a reputation that far exceeds its modest size. Its loyal customer base and enduring popularity are a testament to the hard work and values that Anna helped instil from the very beginning.

As the community mourns her passing, many will remember Mrs Anna Irons not only for her quiet strength behind the scenes but also for her role in shaping a business that has brought comfort and sweetness to generations of local families.

Mrs Irons leaves behind a lasting legacy that continues to grow — just like the bakery she helped build.
