Good Morning Ballymena has been awarded the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service — the highest honour given to volunteer groups across the United Kingdom — in recognition of its exceptional contribution to the wellbeing of older and vulnerable people in the local community.
The organisation, which provides vital support, reassurance, and companionship to individuals across the Ballymena area, described the accolade as a deeply meaningful acknowledgement of the dedication shown by its volunteers.
Project Co-ordinator Debbie Chestnutt said the honour belongs to the volunteers who give their time selflessly every day.
“This award is a tribute to every volunteer who turns up, rain or shine, to make a difference. I am honoured to accept it on their behalf and deeply grateful for the spirit of generosity that makes our work possible.
“It recognises not only our collective efforts, but also the countless acts of kindness and commitment from every volunteer who makes this organisation what it is. I am both humbled and proud to stand among them.”
The award, often described as the voluntary sector equivalent of an MBE, celebrates community groups whose work has delivered outstanding benefit to others.
For Good Morning Ballymena, it serves as a powerful endorsement of the organisation’s longstanding commitment to promoting safety, social connection, and emotional wellbeing among those who may otherwise feel isolated.
Local political representatives also paid tribute to the achievement.
Jon Burrows MLA (UUP, North Antrim) commended the volunteers’ dedication, describing Good Morning Ballymena as an example of community spirit at its strongest.
“Good Morning Ballymena represents the very best of our community,” he said.
“Their volunteers give their time selflessly, offering support, companionship, and reassurance to those who need it most. This award is richly deserved, and I commend every individual involved in the project for their compassion, dedication, and service to others.”
Mr Burrows added that the recognition highlights the positive impact the organisation continues to have on community cohesion:
“Good Morning Ballymena’s work demonstrates how compassion and local commitment can transform lives. Their contribution helps ensure Ballymena remains a caring, connected, and supportive place to live. I congratulate them wholeheartedly on this significant and well-earned recognition.”
Good Morning Ballymena also issued its gratitude to the volunteers, staff, supporters, and community partners whose contributions make the service possible. The organisation said the award shines a spotlight on the compassion that continues to define Ballymena’s community identity.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service will be formally presented to the organisation later this year.
