Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has confirmed that the Glenshesk Road in Ballycastle will reopen to traffic by 5pm on Monday 1 December, marking a significant milestone after months of disruption caused by severe weather damage.

The route, which has been partially closed between Glenbank Road and Greenan Road since last year, suffered a serious embankment failure during extreme weather conditions.

The Department for Infrastructure has since carried out a complex engineering project to stabilise and reconstruct the affected area.

A lane closure will remain in place throughout December to allow for the construction of a masonry parapet, described as the final element of the repair works.

The Department hopes to remove all temporary traffic management as quickly as possible, but stressed that progress will remain weather-dependent.

Minister Kimmins said:

“The local community will be well aware that the Glenshesk Road has been partially closed between the junctions of Glenbank Road and Greenan Road since the serious embankment failure that occurred due to severe weather conditions last year.

“Given the severity of the damage a significant engineering solution was required before we could safely reopen the road. I am pleased to say that the work is nearing completion, and the road will reopen for all road users on Monday 1 December 2025.

“I am very mindful of the impact the closure has had, and I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential maintenance work was carried out. I would also like to acknowledge all those who helped to deliver this significant infrastructure project.”

The reopening will restore a key link for commuters and local residents, offering long-awaited relief following months of detours and delays.

The Department continues to encourage motorists to exercise caution while lane restrictions remain in place during the final phase of the scheme.
