A major fundraising walk along Northern Ireland’s iconic Causeway Coast is set to return this summer, as AWARE NI launches its flagship Giant Steps event for 2026 — at a time when demand for mental health support has never been greater.
Taking place on Saturday, 6 June, the popular event — now in its fifth year — has already raised more than £200,000 to sustain frontline services, with organisers hoping for another strong turnout from communities across the region.
A walk with purpose
Open to anyone aged 14 and over, Giant Steps offers three scenic routes — 7, 13, or 20 miles — making it accessible to walkers of all abilities, from first-timers to seasoned hikers.

But beyond the challenge and stunning coastal views, the event carries a deeper purpose: supporting people living with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
Funds raised help maintain AWARE NI’s network of peer-led support groups, often described by users as a “lifeline” — safe, understanding spaces where people can connect and share experiences.
Growing need for support
The return of the event comes amid rising mental health pressures across Northern Ireland.
With 290 deaths by suicide recorded in 2024, the need for accessible support and early intervention remains urgent. At the same time, charities face increasing financial strain, making community-driven fundraising initiatives like Giant Steps more critical than ever.
Backing from business

Cookstown and Belfast based construction firm Bell Contracts has been confirmed as headline sponsor for the second consecutive year.
Barry Potter, Social Value Manager at Bell Contracts, said:
“We’re delighted to return as headline sponsor of Giant Steps for a second year. We absolutely loved being part of this positive and energising event last year, so it was an easy decision to come on board again.
“Mental health affects every community, and supporting AWARE NI helps ensure people can access support when they need it most. This event brings together impact, community, and one of Northern Ireland’s most incredible landscapes.”
“A lifeline for many”
AWARE NI’s Community and Events Officer, Bridie Kelly, highlighted the importance of both the event and the continued partnership:
“Giant Steps is our flagship fundraising event, and having Bell Contracts return as headline sponsor is hugely significant. Their continued support helps us keep our services running and ensures people don’t have to face mental ill-health alone.
“We’d love to see as many people as possible get involved this year - with routes to suit all abilities, every participant helps strengthen mental health support across Northern Ireland.”
What participants can expect

Those taking part will receive a full event package, including professional outdoor support, a branded t-shirt, and a celebratory medal — along with a finish-line meal and refreshments.
Participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship, directly contributing to AWARE NI’s work supporting individuals and families across the region.
With registration now open, organisers are urging individuals, groups, and workplace teams to sign up — whether for the physical challenge, the cause, or both.
