The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council are joined by support services to launch this year’s Community Connect event in the Antrim Forum

Families are being invited to a free event this week designed to help residents prepare for the new school year while staying well, safe, and connected.

Community Connect will take place on Tuesday 19 August, from 11am to 1pm at Antrim Forum, hosted by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council. The event builds on the success of last year’s Ready Set School initiative and offers a wide range of support, advice, and activities for all ages.

Visitors can access practical help with school essentials, including school uniforms, free school bags and accessories, and links to affordable supplies. Employment opportunities will also be highlighted, with information on local jobs, apprenticeships, and dedicated support schemes for people aged over 55.

A strong focus on safety will run throughout the day, with representatives from the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), newly appointed Community Safety Wardens, and the Council’s Home Safety Officer on hand to discuss accident prevention, personal wellbeing, and home security.

Health and wellbeing services will also feature prominently. Guests can access leisure information, stop-smoking support, and free MOT-style health checks. For families looking to make nutritious meals on a budget, the Community Kitchen will share healthy cooking tips and inspiration.

The event also encourages sustainable living, with the Council’s Environmental Health team offering advice on reducing energy use and adopting eco-friendly habits.

Meanwhile, representatives from Community Advice Antrim and Newtownabbey will provide guidance on benefits, budgeting, and wider financial matters.

Plenty of interactive activities are planned to keep the day fun and engaging, including a bouncy castle, first aid and CPR demonstrations, boccia sessions with the Antrim and Newtownabbey Seniors’ Forum, bike safety advice from Sustrans, and live performances from the Antrim School of Music.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, said:

“Community Connect is all about bringing people together to provide practical support and helpful advice for families and individuals as they head into the new school year. Whether you’re looking for assistance with school essentials, health, safety, or employment, this event is a great opportunity to connect with local services and enjoy a fun, welcoming environment.”

The event is free to attend and requires no booking. Residents are encouraged to simply drop in on the day and explore the support and services available in their community.
