From 60 to over 200: EA Chief applauds Dunclug’s remarkable growth as school continues to excel

Dunclug Primary School in Ballymena welcomed a distinguished guest on Tuesday, 11 March, as Mr Richard Pengelly, Chief Executive of the Education Authority (EA), visited to celebrate the school’s remarkable achievements.


The visit underscored the local school’s status as a beacon of educational excellence and a cornerstone of the local community.



Under the leadership of Principal Mr Alastair Beacom, Dunclug Primary has transformed into a thriving hub of learning and support. From humble beginnings with just 60 pupils, the school has blossomed to a roll of over 200, a testament to the dedication of its exceptional teaching and support staff.

This dynamic team has not only created a secure and nurturing environment for pupils but has also forged strong partnerships with parents, ensuring the best possible outcomes for every child.


During his visit, Mr Pengelly took time to meet with teaching, non-teaching, and kitchen staff, personally thanking them for their tireless efforts. He was given a comprehensive tour of the school, where he engaged with pupils who proudly showcased their learning and the breadth of opportunities available to them.


From the school’s child-centred approach to its outstanding provision for special educational needs (SEN), outdoor learning initiatives, nurture programmes, and extensive extra-curricular activities, the pupils demonstrated the vibrant spirit that defines Dunclug Primary.



The school’s community and international links further highlighted its commitment to broadening horizons and fostering inclusivity.

‘A happy school is the best school’


Principal Beacom beamed with pride as he reflected on the day. “Our pupils were quite rightly the stars of the show,” he said.


“Mr Pengelly commented on the smiling, happy faces throughout the school and the friendly, warm welcome he received. We are thrilled that he chose our school to visit, to see what a welcoming, inclusive, and nurturing school we are.”

Speaking to Love Ballymena following his visit, Mr Pengelly praised the school’s extraordinary journey.


“I was delighted to have had the opportunity to visit Dunclug Primary School to meet with the principal, staff, and children, and to learn more about the school’s nurturing, inclusive, and welcoming ethos which is at the core of everything they do,” he said.


“It was a particular pleasure to acknowledge and celebrate the growth in pupil numbers, which is a fantastic achievement. My sincere thanks to the entire staff team – both teaching and non-teaching – for their dedication to creating such a positive learning environment for all children.”
