Work has officially begun on a long-awaited new Park and Ride facility at Ballymena Bus and Train Station, marking a significant milestone in a campaign that has spanned more than a decade.
The North Antrim DUP MLA Paul Frew has welcomed confirmation from Translink that construction is now underway on a 387-space Park and Ride expansion, an issue he says he has been actively pursuing since 2013.
Speaking following the announcement, Mr Frew said:
“I am delighted that Translink have commenced construction on a new, 387 space, Park and Ride facility at Ballymena Bus and Train Station, an issue I have been campaigning for and working on since 2013.”
The development is expected to bring much-needed relief to local residents who have experienced ongoing disruption caused by overspill parking from the busy transport hub.
“For residents and users of the Bus and Train Station this has been a long time coming. I have worked with a significant number of constituents over the years who live close to the station and have been experiencing significant disruption as a result of overflowing from the car park.”
Mr Frew highlighted Princes Street as one of the areas most affected, noting that the expansion would make a tangible difference to those living nearby.
“This has been a particular issue for residents living on Princes Street in Ballymena, the news that Translink will now be expanding the carpark will be of great benefit and relief to residents.”
The benefits of the project are expected to extend beyond nearby households, with regular bus and rail users also set to gain from the increased capacity.
“This expansion will also be invaluable to Bus and Train users, who often struggle to get their car parked due to a lack of spaces.”
In addition to increasing parking availability, the project will include wider improvements aimed at enhancing the overall user experience.
“It is also welcome news that Translink have announced the expansion will also see enhanced security and safety features, as well as accessibility upgrades.”
Mr Frew also paid tribute to Translink for its sustained engagement throughout the process, from early planning to the start of construction.
“I want to thank Translink for their cooperation on this matter throughout the years, the identification of suitable land, the concept and design phase, the planning application and now the construction stage, and I look forward to seeing the progress of this work, which I am advised is due to be completed by autumn 2026.”
Importantly for commuters, Translink has confirmed that the existing Park and Ride facility will remain operational during the construction phase.
“I want to assure residents and users of the carpark that Translink have advised me that use of the existing park and ride facility will not be impacted by the works which are underway.”
Describing the project as a clear win for the town, Mr Frew added:
“This is a good news story for the people of Ballymena and beyond, and proof that persistence pays off.”
Once completed, the expanded facility is expected to improve access to public transport, reduce congestion in surrounding residential streets, and support Ballymena’s role as a key transport hub in the wider region.
