Rural junction at Glenleslie Road and Moneyduff Road, County Antrim

Safety concerns raised by local residents have prompted action at a rural junction in north Antrim, with confirmation that improvements are now on the way.

North Antrim MLA Paul Frew has welcomed a response from the Department for Infrastructure (DfI), outlining planned measures to improve visibility and safety at the junction of Glenleslie Road and Moneyduff Road, Clough.

The move follows representations made by Mr Frew after constituents highlighted ongoing worries about the junction.

Residents’ concerns spark action

Speaking after receiving confirmation from DfI Roads, Mr Frew said:

“After being contacted by a few concerned constituents regarding the safety of the junction at the Glenleslie and Moneyduff Road, I contacted DFI Roads to raise these issues and to see what improvements could be made.”

He said concerns centred on visibility, signage, and road markings at the location.

What improvements are planned?

DfI has now confirmed a series of practical steps aimed at improving safety in the short term.

Mr Frew explained:

“After raising concerns around the safety of the junction, and the suitability of road markings and signage I am happy that I received confirmation from DFI Roads that improvements will be carried out.”

The planned works include:

  • Cleaning existing road signage

  • Cutting back overgrown hedges to improve visibility

  • Refreshing the “SLOW” road markings at the junction

“These measures will improve safety and visibility,” he added.

Long-term upgrade ‘unlikely’

Despite the welcome improvements, Mr Frew said more significant changes to the junction are unlikely in the near future.

He revealed that he had also raised the issue of speeding along the route and asked whether further safety upgrades could be delivered.

“I have been advised that an assessment was carried out on this junction in the past, however, disappointingly I have been told that whilst the junction would benefit from improvement, the low accident history and high costs to deliver such a scheme make the delivery of such an improvement highly unlikely.”

Looking ahead

Mr Frew thanked DfI Roads for its response and said he hopes to see the works completed soon.

“I thank the DFI for their timely response to my queries and look forward to seeing the improvements carried out as soon as possible.”

While larger-scale upgrades may not be on the horizon, the planned measures are expected to provide immediate reassurance to local residents who raised the alarm.
