Derry’s riverfront is set to transform into a giant family playground this summer as the 2026 Foyle Maritime Festival prepares to bring four days of circus acts, tall ships, fireworks, science experiences and water adventures to the city.
Running from Thursday June 25 to Sunday June 28, the festival will once again take over the quayside and River Foyle with one of the biggest public events in the north west calendar, drawing thousands of visitors to the city across an action-packed long weekend.
This year’s theme, “Forged by the Foyle: It’s in Our DNA”, places a strong focus on the city’s maritime identity while delivering a programme designed to appeal to all ages — from young children and families to thrill-seekers and culture lovers.
From live circus performances and interactive marine experiences to towering historic ships and a major fireworks finale, organisers say the 2026 programme has been designed to turn the waterfront into a fully immersive festival experience.
Carnival of Colours returns with circus and street performances
One of the biggest attractions for younger visitors will be the return of Carnival of Colours, bringing four days of circus and street arts entertainment to The Dock behind Sainsbury’s.
Families can expect acrobatics, juggling, comedy performances, circus workshops, face painting and sea-themed entertainment throughout the weekend.
Performers set to appear include Hikapee, Tumble Circus and Fraser Hooper, with organisers promising a lively mix of visual spectacle and interactive fun aimed at keeping children entertained across the festival site.
Family-friendly theatre productions will also form part of the programme, including Up the Foyle in a Bubble, described as a magical story of mermaids, music and friendship, alongside the energetic circus theatre show Everywhere’s a Beach.
River Foyle to host water sports and stunt displays
The River Foyle itself will once again become one of the festival’s main stages, with a packed programme of inclusive water-based activities and demonstrations curated by the Loughs Agency.
Visitors looking for hands-on experiences will be able to take part in a variety of river activities, while spectators can watch high-energy stunt performances from The Edge Wakeboarding Team, which returns with daily displays on the water.
Marine-themed discovery experiences will also feature heavily throughout the weekend.
The Loughs Agency Marine Machines and VR Experience will allow families to meet live marine creatures, test their angling skills and explore underwater environments through virtual reality technology.
Science, heritage and maritime history woven through programme
Alongside the entertainment, this year’s festival programme places a strong emphasis on education, heritage and environmental awareness.
The Science of Water experience by FUSE Arts will offer hands-on STEAM activities, storytelling sessions and environmental workshops designed to engage multiple generations.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the region’s maritime heritage through exhibits and live character encounters within the Derry North Atlantic Museum festival zone.
Organisers say the mix of entertainment and learning is intended to make the festival both accessible and meaningful for families visiting across the four days.
Festival and Events Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council Helena Hasson said the programme had been carefully developed to create shared experiences for visitors of all ages.
“The Foyle Maritime Festival is all about creating memorable experiences for families and communities to enjoy together,” she said.
“This year’s programme has been carefully designed to offer something for every age group, from interactive learning and water activities to spectacular live entertainment and immersive cultural experiences.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors from near and far to celebrate everything that makes our riverfront and maritime heritage so special.”
Tall ships and food village expected to draw crowds
Among the festival highlights will be the arrival of visiting vessels including the world-famous Galeon Andalucia and returning Tall Ship favourite The Phoenix.
The ships are expected to become major visitor attractions across the weekend as crowds gather along the quayside to explore the historic vessels and experience the maritime atmosphere.
Food will also play a major role in this year’s celebrations, with the Legenderry Food Village and Maritime Markets offering a wide range of locally sourced cuisine throughout the festival.
Organisers have confirmed that vendors will also provide reduced-price meals for children during the event, adding to the family-focused approach across the four-day programme.
Fireworks finale to close four-day celebration
The festival will conclude on Sunday night with a large fireworks display over the River Foyle, bringing the celebrations to a dramatic close after four days of performances, activities and riverfront entertainment.
With major attractions spread across the city’s waterfront, organisers are expecting significant visitor numbers throughout the weekend as the Foyle Maritime Festival once again positions itself as one of Northern Ireland’s largest summer family events.
