Residents across Mid and East Antrim are set to benefit from an enhanced grass cutting programme and new community support scheme, following a successful motion by DUP Councillor for Knockagh, Peter Johnston.

Councillor Johnston confirmed that the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) will now carry out three additional grass cuts per season along all main arterial routes in the borough – the first initiative of its kind in Northern Ireland.

“I’m thrilled to announce that following my notice of motion, DfI contractors will now carry out THREE extra grass cuts per season across all main arterial routes in our borough!” he said.

“This is a FIRST for any council in Northern Ireland, and will definitely enhance the look of our towns and main roads.”

Alongside the extended cutting schedule, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is also investing in new lawnmowers, strimmers and other gardening equipment, which will be available to borrow free of charge for residents and community groups keen to maintain their local areas.

Councillor Johnston added:

“But that’s not all! The council is also investing in lawn mowers, strimmers, and other equipment, which will be available to borrow FREE OF CHARGE for residents or community groups who want to give some TLC to their local areas.

“So many already do this and it makes such a big difference to an area when people decide to go above and beyond.”

The scheme, due to launch in April 2026, is designed to encourage civic pride and support those who already volunteer their time to improve community spaces.

“We need to get back to basics and deliver on front line services and I believe this is a step in the right direction,” Councillor Johnston said.

Further details on how residents can access the equipment loan scheme are expected to be released in the coming months.
