Passengers travelling between Belfast and Dublin on Enterprise rail services are being warned to expect delays and bus transfers for three days after engineering works forced the closure of part of the line south of the border.

The rail line between Dundalk and Dublin will close from Saturday 30 May until Monday 1 June inclusive, with replacement buses operating for affected sections of the journey.

The disruption is expected to affect passengers travelling between Northern Ireland and Dublin during the busy travel weekends heading into the start of summer, including commuters, holidaymakers, concertgoers and airport passengers.

Revised timetables and replacement buses planned

The closure is the result of engineering works being carried out by Irish Rail.

During the works period, Enterprise services will continue operating between Belfast Grand Central Station and Dundalk, but passengers travelling onward to Dublin will be transferred to rail replacement buses.

Replacement bus services will operate between Dundalk and Dublin Connolly Station, including stops at Drogheda.

A revised train timetable will also operate on the Belfast to Dundalk section of the route throughout the disruption period.

Passengers using the cross-border service are being urged to allow additional travel time and check schedules carefully before travelling.

Potential impact for Northern Ireland travellers

The disruption is expected to affect passengers travelling for weekend breaks, flights, concerts, business trips and early summer travel plans, longer journey times are expected due to bus transfers replacing direct rail services on part of the route.

Travellers from Ballymena and across Northern Ireland connecting into Belfast for onward Enterprise journeys may also need to adjust travel plans to avoid missed connections.

Passengers urged to plan ahead

Translink is advising customers to check journey details in advance before setting off.

The disruption will remain in place until normal services resume following completion of the engineering works on Monday 1 June.
