DUP MLA Paul Frew and Cllr William McCaughey have called for renewed momentum on long-awaited improvements to the Broughshane Road and Woodside Road junction in Ballymena, citing growing safety concerns among local residents.

Mr Frew said he had been in “contact with DFI Roads Officials regarding this stretch of road for some time now” and welcomed the fact that plans are in place to improve the junction and road leading to the ECOS Roundabout.

He continued:

“There are several factors and outside influences still to be ironed out not least the budget which is proving to be very challenging but we live in hope that funding can be found sooner rather than later.”

Councillor McCaughey said the junction remains a key concern for many in the community, particularly during peak travel times.

“We have been contacted by many constituents who are concerned by the busyness of this junction especially at peak rush hour times and the risk of road traffic accidents and serious injury,” he said.

“We will continue to highlight these concerns and work with DFI Roads Officials to address the safety aspects of this important junction.”

The Broughshane Road and Woodside Road junction serves as a major route into Ballymena, with traffic often building up at busy periods.

Local representatives say improving visibility and traffic flow would not only enhance safety but also support smoother journeys across one of the town’s most used approaches.

Both the MLA and councillor stressed the need for budgetary prioritisation within the Department for Infrastructure, warning that any further delays could prolong community frustration and risk.

The DUP representatives say they will continue to press for updates and keep local residents informed as plans progress.
