Portrush RNLI experienced a busy evening with two separate launches within minutes, after being tasked by Belfast Coastguard to assist individuals in difficulty off the north coast of Northern Ireland.

At 8.11pm, Portrush Inshore Lifeboat was requested to attend a report of paddleboarders in difficulty between Curran Point (East Strand) and the Skerries.

Conditions were ideal, and the volunteer crew launched swiftly at 8.25pm.

Crew members Ben Wilson and Karl O’Neill responded promptly, locating the paddleboarders quickly and assisting them safely back to shore, where they were met by Coastguard officers.

Just minutes earlier, at 8.03pm, the All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) was also requested to launch to a separate emergency involving a person in distress at Castlerock. The lifeboat, with its volunteer crew on board, launched at 8.18pm and reached the scene at 8.30pm.

Upon arrival, it was confirmed that the individual had managed to make it to shore without assistance. The Coastguard and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service were on hand to assess her condition. The lifeboat and crew were stood down and returned to station by 8.44pm.

Charlie Grossie, Launch Authority at Portrush RNLI, said:

“This is the start of the summer season, and we would ask that if you see someone in difficulty in the water, please dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

He added:

“We would also advise that if you are intending to go out on the water at all, make sure you have a means of dialling 999 if you get into difficulty.”

As warmer weather draws more people to Northern Ireland’s coastal waters, the RNLI is urging the public to prioritise safety and ensure they are equipped with proper means of communication when heading out on the sea.
