On the longest day of the year, the dramatic cliffs of Fairhead in Ballycastle witnessed a heart-stirring blend of courage, community spirit and charity, as fifty daring individuals abseiled nearly 200 feet to raise vital funds for Little Heroes—a charity supporting sick children at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
Basking in glorious sunshine, the unique event brought together adrenaline-seekers, supporters and local cheerleaders for a day of action and generosity. With close to £40,000 raised, the abseil marks one of the most successful community fundraising efforts for Little Heroes to date.
The event, held on Saturday, June 21, was more than just a thrill-seeking challenge. It served as a powerful show of solidarity with the hospital’s young patients and their families.

The funds will help Little Heroes provide life-changing medical equipment, family support services, and research into childhood illnesses, while also honouring the hospital’s dedicated paediatric staff—fondly known as the “Big Heroes”.
Among the abseilers was Tracey Roberts from Ballycastle, who personally raised £1,100 for the cause. Her participation was driven by a deep appreciation for the charity’s impact.
“The money raised from all who sponsored me will help children get the best possible care, give their families much-needed support, and recognise the tireless work of the paediatric teams,” said Tracey.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who supported me so far. It’s been an unforgettable experience for such a worthy cause.”
The day also featured a cheerleading performance before each descent, heightening the energy and drawing applause from gathered supporters. Local farmer Sean McBride was praised for his generosity in offering his farm and yard as a car park and rest area for attendees.
The Fairhead Abseil exemplifies how communities can come together to create meaningful impact—even from great heights.

As the sun set on the spectacular cliffs, organisers encouraged the public to continue donating to the cause. Supporters can still contribute to Tracey’s fundraising page via JustGiving.
Tracey concluded: “I would love it if you can support me on to support Little Heroes, on what has been exciting and meaningful journey.”
