A County Antrim farmer has been taken to hospital after an incident involving a slurry pit on a farm near Ballycastle.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Whitepark Road on Tuesday afternoon, 16 September, after reports that the man had entered the slurry pit.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) and colleagues from the Fire Service were dispatched following a 999 call shortly before 3pm. However, on arrival, the Fire Service confirmed that no action was required on their part.

A spokesperson for NIAS said:

“The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 14:56 on Tuesday 16th September, following reports of an incident in the Whitepark Road Area, Ballycastle.

“NIAS tasked one Emergency Ambulance crews and one Ambulance Officer.

“NIAS also tasked the Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS on board to the scene.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one person was taken to Causeway Hospital by Ambulance.”

No further details have yet been released on the man’s condition.

Slurry pit incidents remain a serious safety concern in Northern Ireland’s farming community, with health officials regularly reminding farmers of the dangers posed by toxic gases released during slurry handling.
