Independent Councillor Lawrie Philpott has welcomed a major milestone for North Ballymena Rangers FC after the club officially received the keys to Lamont Park Football Stadia on Thursday evening (March 5), under a long-term lease agreement.
The venue — more commonly known locally as Smithfield — will now serve as the club’s permanent home ground, bringing to life a vision that just 18 months ago seemed little more than a distant ambition.
For players, supporters and club officials, the handover marks the culmination of months of meetings, discussions and determination aimed at securing a stable base for the team and its future development.
Speaking following the handover, Councillor Philpott described the moment as a significant step forward not only for the club but for the wider community.
“Tonight represents a truly momentous occasion for North Ballymena Rangers FC. What began as a simple idea just 18 months ago has become a reality through hard work, determination, and a shared commitment to developing sport in our community.
“It has been a pleasure for me to support the club throughout this process and to help guide discussions that have led to this long-term lease agreement for Lamont Park Football Stadia.”
The agreement provides North Ballymena Rangers with a permanent base from which to grow, giving the club the opportunity to develop the facilities and strengthen its presence within the local football community.
Councillor Philpott also acknowledged the role played by others who supported the process, including North Antrim MLA Timothy Gaston.
“I would also like to place on record my thanks to North Antrim MLA Timothy Gaston for his help and support throughout this journey. Collaboration and cooperation have been key to making this happen.”
Club officials, players and supporters have welcomed the news and are now looking ahead to developing the site and building on the progress made over the past year and a half.
Reflecting on the achievement, Councillor Philpott said the story of the club’s progress highlights what can be accomplished when communities work together.
“This is only the beginning for North Ballymena Rangers FC. The club has shown what can be achieved when people come together for the good of the community. I wish them every success with their future plans and look forward to continuing to work with them as they further develop the club.
“They are a fantastic example of how smaller clubs can achieve great things with determination, teamwork and community support.”
With the keys now handed over, the focus turns to the future — and the opportunity for North Ballymena Rangers to build a lasting home at Lamont Park.
