A local councillor has called for civic celebrations to honour Broughshane native Josh Rock following Northern Ireland’s historic win at the 2025 World Cup of Darts.

In an electrifying final in Frankfurt, Rock and teammate Daryl Gurney (from Londonderry) secured a 10–9 victory over Wales, marking the first time Northern Ireland has lifted the prestigious trophy.

Rock’s standout performance, including a tournament record for the number of 180s thrown, has drawn praise from across the sporting community and beyond.

TUV Braid Councillor Christopher Jamieson has led calls for formal recognition, praising the achievement as not only a sporting triumph but a proud moment for the Broughshane community.

“I am absolutely thrilled to extend my congratulations to the Northern Ireland darts team on achieving an extraordinary victory at the 2025 World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt,” he said.

“In a gripping final decider, Daryl Gurney and our very own Josh Rock triumphed 10–9 over Wales, clinching Northern Ireland’s first ever World Cup of Darts title.”

Councillor Jamieson expressed particular pride in Rock, who grew up in Broughshane and has become a rising star in the international darts scene.

“As the local councillor representing Broughshane, I could not be prouder to see Josh Rock – our hometown hero – step onto the world stage and deliver such a performance. Breaking the tournament record for 180s made it all the more special.”

Emphasising the significance of Rock’s achievement, Jamieson confirmed he will be requesting an official civic reception:

“Josh’s return to Broughshane will be met with a hero’s welcome. I will be requesting a Mayor’s reception for him. I’ve no doubt that his achievement will inspire future local sports stars.”

The victory has sparked celebrations across Northern Ireland, with fans hailing the team’s tenacity and Rock’s breakout performance. As calls grow for local and national recognition, Broughshane prepares to welcome home a world champion.

Josh Rock’s contribution has not only brought sporting prestige to Northern Ireland but has firmly cemented his status as one of darts’ brightest young talents – and a hometown hero deserving of the highest accolades.
