Thousands of people packed the streets, parks and riverside of Coleraine on Saturday as Armed Forces Day 2026 transformed the town into a celebration of military service, community pride and national remembrance.

From solemn acts of reflection at the War Memorial to dramatic parachute displays above the town and a packed programme of entertainment throughout the day, residents and visitors turned out in huge numbers to honour serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and military families.

The major event saw Coleraine town centre, Christie Park and the River Bann become focal points for one of Northern Ireland’s largest Armed Forces Day celebrations, with military displays, live performances, family activities and ceremonial events drawing crowds from across the region.

From remembrance to celebration

The day began with formal commemorations in The Diamond, where a Drumhead Service and wreath-laying ceremony offered an opportunity to reflect on the dedication and sacrifice of members of the Armed Forces community, both past and present.

As proceedings moved from remembrance to celebration, spectators lined the streets to welcome the Armed Forces Day Parade, led by the Royal Irish Regiment.

Serving personnel, veterans and cadets received warm applause as they marched through the town centre before making their way to Christie Park, where the main programme of events continued throughout the afternoon.

Earlier in the morning, a dedicated Quiet Time Session gave families the opportunity to enjoy the event in a more relaxed environment, with a Family Fun Zone, soft play facilities and interactive military displays helping ensure the celebrations were accessible to all.

Crowds look to the skies for RAF Falcons display

One of the day’s most anticipated moments came shortly after midday when spectators turned their attention skyward for the arrival of the RAF Falcons parachute display team.

Their dramatic descent over Coleraine drew enthusiastic applause from crowds gathered across the town and proved to be one of the standout highlights of the event.

Visitors also explored the Military Village at Christie Park, where representatives from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force showcased equipment, vehicles and displays while engaging with members of the public.

Military demonstrations, aviation exhibits and hands-on activities provided visitors with a closer look at the work carried out by the UK’s Armed Forces.

Entertainment across the town

Broadcaster and media personality Paul Clark acted as compère throughout the day, guiding visitors through a packed schedule of commemorative events, military displays and live entertainment.

Music and performances added to the festival atmosphere, with Ballroom Blitz, Rock Choir, Harpurs Hill Steel Band and the Swingtime Starlets entertaining audiences in Christie Park.

Meanwhile, performances by the RAF Band Ensemble and the Band, Bugles, Pipes and Drums of the Royal Irish Regiment attracted crowds to The Diamond Council Stage.

Across the town centre, pipe bands and drum majors staged a series of pop-up performances in Christie Park, The Mall and Kingsgate Street, ensuring activity and entertainment could be found throughout the event area.

Military traditions and aviation heritage on display

Activity on the River Bann proved particularly popular during the afternoon, while a ceremonial gun salute by 206 (Ulster) Battery Royal Artillery provided a powerful reminder of the traditions and heritage associated with military service.

The celebrations concluded with a much-anticipated flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota aircraft.

The historic aircraft’s appearance provided a fitting tribute to Britain’s aviation heritage and generations of service personnel who have served their country over the decades.

Mayor hails a ‘tremendous success’

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Dawn Huggins, said:

“Armed Forces Day 2026 was a tremendous success and it was wonderful to see so many people come together in Coleraine to recognise and celebrate the contribution of our Armed Forces community.

“The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the dedication, professionalism and sacrifice of serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and military families, while also offering a fantastic day of entertainment and activities for residents and visitors of all ages.

“I would like to thank everyone who attended, along with the many organisations, volunteers, performers, military personnel, emergency services, community groups and council staff whose hard work and commitment helped make the event such a success.”

Brigadier Piers Ashfield DSO MBE, Commander 38 (Irish) Brigade, added:

“Armed Forces Day here in Coleraine has been a wonderful opportunity to recognise the dedication and professionalism of our people, and to thank the public for their continued support.

“Seeing so many local people come together with serving personnel, veterans and their families is a fitting tribute to those who serve. It’s a real highlight of the close bond between the armed forces and the communities they serve. The warmth and turnout is exactly what days like this are about.”

A day that brought the community together

Organisers also thanked event partners, Armed Forces representatives, veterans’ organisations, community groups, volunteers, performers, local businesses and residents whose support helped deliver the event.

Armed Forces Day remains the UK’s national opportunity to recognise the contribution made by serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and military families.

Judging by the crowds that filled Coleraine throughout Saturday, the town embraced that role wholeheartedly, delivering a day that combined remembrance, celebration and community spirit in equal measure.
