New pyjamas are being collected across Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough to bring comfort to women and children affected by domestic abuse this Christmas, following donations of more than 900 pairs last year.

The Women’s Aid ABCLN Christmas Pyjama Appeal supports families living in refuge accommodation and those receiving help in the community. Residents can donate at four council collection points until Monday 14 December.

Led by Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick and supported by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, the appeal is now in its sixth year.

A reminder that families are not alone

Councillor Kirkpatrick said:

“Christmas can be an incredibly difficult time for women and children affected by domestic abuse. A simple gift, such as a new pair of pyjamas, can bring comfort, hope and a sense of normality, while reminding someone that they are cared for and not alone.”

She said more than 900 pairs were donated last year and encouraged residents who can to support this year’s collection.

Gillian Robinson, Chief Executive of Women’s Aid ABCLN, explained what the donations can mean for families:

“New pyjamas are more than a practical gift. They offer comfort, warmth and a sense of care at what can be an especially difficult time of year.”

Where to donate new pyjamas

The appeal welcomes new pyjamas for women, children and young people of all ages. The collection runs from Tuesday 3 November until Monday 14 December, with donations accepted at:

• Antrim Civic Centre

• Mossley Mill

• Antrim Castle Gardens Gift Shop

• Ballyclare Town Hall

Women’s Aid ABCLN will collect and distribute all donations to women and children across the borough who need support this Christmas.

The charity provides confidential support services, information and emergency accommodation for women and children affected by domestic abuse throughout the area.

Further information about its services is available at https://www.womensaidabcln.org.

For families receiving support, Robinson said the appeal carries a message beyond the gift itself:

“Every donation is a reminder to women and children that they are not alone.”
