The Baby and Me parent group in Cullybackey is led by health visitor Loretta Hegarty and student health visitor Mary Donnelly.
Mums and babies in the Cullybackey area have been enjoying the benefits of baby massage at a group set up by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust.
The five-week course took place at a Baby and Me parent group led by health visitor, Loretta Hegarty, and student health visitor, Mary Donnelly with eight mums and babies ranging from two to six months taking part.
Health visiting teams are certified by the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) to teach baby massage techniques as part of a suite of evidence-based interventions used to promote infant mental health.

Explaining more about its benefits, Loretta said:
“Baby massage is an ideal first activity for babies and it is known to help with sleep patterns, colic and constipation pains and it can be used to calm a baby when they are teething.
“One of the central benefits we see at the group is the special bonding time it offers at a crucial period when the relationship between a parent and their baby is developing.
“Massage releases the body’s natural ‘feel good’ chemical, oxytocin, which helps the mother and baby to form a close bond. This is good for connection, brain development and a sense of attachment and love.
“In the calm and relaxing environment of the group, we help parents learn more about tuning into their baby and understanding and responding to their baby’s needs. It helps them to read their baby’s cues and body language and builds confidence in their parenting skills. We see improved interactions and a sense of wellbeing and enjoyment for both.
“Parents and carers tell us how much they enjoy attending each week as it is a lovely way to enjoy time with their baby and helps with bonding. It is a relaxing environment and we see the support that the mums offer one another as another important benefit.”

She said:
“It’s lovely to meet up with other mums who have babies around the same stage. The baby massage is great for settling them. You rarely hear a little cry in that hour. They’re really focused and settled and it’s lovely to interact with the new mums as well.”
