The Museum of Orange Heritage in Belfast is preparing to welcome visitors to its annual Boyne Day on Saturday, 16 August, promising a full day of history, heritage, and family fun.
Held at Schomberg House on the Cregagh Road, the free event is designed to make the events of the Battle of the Boyne — fought in 1690 between King William III and King James II — accessible and engaging for all ages.
The battle, a decisive moment in the Glorious Revolution, shaped the political and religious landscape of the British Isles for centuries.
Museum curator Dr Jonathan Mattison explained:
“Boyne Day is our way of bringing the legacy of the Battle of the Boyne to life. This was one of the most seminal battles and indeed moments in the history of the British Isles and was integral to the Glorious Revolution.”
Interactive history for all ages
Visitors can explore the past through living history re-enactments, where costumed interpreters will demonstrate military drills, weapons of the period, and the daily life of soldiers and civilians from the late 17th century.
Families can take part in traditional games, arts and crafts workshops, and younger visitors can enjoy face painting inspired by historical themes.
Dr Mattison added:
“Boyne Day helps young and old delve into the history of the period through living history, games, arts and crafts, and you can also have your face painted!”
Exhibitions on the Glorious Revolution and WWII
Alongside Boyne Day activities, the museum’s Liberty Exhibition will continue to offer an in-depth look at the political ideas and historical forces behind the Glorious Revolution, which saw William of Orange take the throne and secure parliamentary governance.
Marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the museum will also feature Orange Voices of World War II, an exhibition highlighting the contributions of Orangemen and women during the conflict.
Visitors will be able to see photographs, wartime artefacts, and personal stories of service and sacrifice, bringing a human dimension to the global events of 1939–1945.
A free event for all
Boyne Day is open to all, regardless of background or prior knowledge of the period. Organisers hope the event will inspire curiosity and promote understanding of a pivotal chapter in British and Irish history.
Admission is free, with no booking required.
Address: 368 Cregagh Road, Belfast, BT6 9EY.
