A talented Ballymena schoolboy has made a splash on the national stage by securing third place in a prestigious competition run by NI Water.
Primary 5 pupil Lewis McCartney, from Camphill Primary School, was recognised for his artistic flair and understanding of clean water science in NI Water’s annual school poster competition.
The initiative, open to young students across Northern Ireland, invited children to creatively explore the essential work undertaken by NI Water scientists who ensure our daily supply of safe, fresh drinking water.
Lewis’ imaginative entry earned high praise from judges, and he was presented with his prize at a special awards event held by NI Water.
The celebration concluded with an exclusive tour of Moyola Water Treatment Works, giving participants a first-hand look at the scientific processes behind water purification and testing.
Stephanie McCullagh, Director of Customer and Operations at NI Water, applauded Lewis’ effort, commenting:
“Congratulations to Lewis McCartney on the fantastic entry which really impressed the judges. Lewis’ submission celebrated the Science of Clean Water, and the important job NI Water scientists do to ensure we have clean, safe water on tap every day.”
She added:
“There were so many fantastic entries, all of them showing a high level of creativity and knowledge of the science behind what it takes to produce clean drinking water. We hope the children and their guests enjoyed their visit to Moyola WTW to see this science in action!
“It was heartening to see the breadth of entries that were created for the competition, so we want to say a big thank you to all the entrants for all their hard work, and congratulations to Lewis again.”
The annual poster competition not only encourages artistic talent but also plays a key role in raising awareness about the importance of water safety and sustainability among young people.
Each year, NI Water’s scientific team conducts more than 120,000 tests and samples to maintain the highest quality standards, working around the clock to deliver safe drinking water to homes and businesses.
Lewis’ success stands as a proud moment for both his school and his local community, as his colourful depiction of clean water science has helped shine a light on the vital role NI Water plays in everyday life.
