Gillian Matthews marking 10 years in business with Willow Beauty
A Ballymena beauty salon born out of uncertainty is now celebrating a decade of success, resilience, and community support.
Willow Beauty marks its 10th anniversary this month, reflecting on a journey that began with a leap of faith and has grown into one of the town’s most recognised and award-winning salons.
From uncertainty to opportunity
Founded by local business owner Gillian Matthews, the salon first opened its doors on 26 March 2016 following a life-changing turning point.
After the closure of the Michelin factory in Ballymena—where her husband had built a successful career—the couple faced an uncertain future. Determined to move forward, Gillian decided to pursue her long-held ambition of running her own salon.
Months of planning and hard work followed, leading to the launch of Willow Beauty in the heart of the town.
Like many new ventures, the early days came with uncertainty. Questions around location, visibility and whether clients would follow were front of mind. But with more than 12 years’ experience in established salons, Gillian brought both expertise and a loyal client base to her new business.
A decade of growth and recognition
Over the past 10 years, Willow Beauty has grown steadily, building a strong and loyal customer base while continuing to attract new clients.
The salon has expanded its treatment offerings, developed relationships with leading brands, and established itself as an exclusive stockist of premium products.
Its success has also been recognised through a series of prestigious awards, including Ballymena Business Excellence Awards for Best Business Premises, Best Young Person in Business, and Customer Service—twice. The salon also secured the Professional Beauty Regional Award for Northern Ireland Boutique Salon of the Year.
Creative flair has also played a part, with additional recognition for Christmas window displays and Ballymena in Bloom presentations.
A people-first approach

At the heart of Willow Beauty’s success is its small, dedicated team. Working closely together, Gillian and her staff have built strong relationships with clients, creating a welcoming and personal experience.
This focus on a friendly, relaxing environment—combined with high-quality treatments—has helped position the salon as a trusted destination for self-care.
Over the years, the role of beauty treatments has evolved. What was once seen as an occasional luxury is now widely viewed as part of everyday wellbeing, with many clients treating salon visits as essential “me time”.
Strong roots in Ballymena
The salon’s connection to Ballymena has been central to its journey. Having worked in the town for more than 18 years, Gillian has built lasting relationships within the local business community.
She has highlighted the ongoing support of organisations such as Ballymena BID and Ballymena Chamber of Commerce, which have provided encouragement and practical assistance throughout the years.
Celebrating the milestone
To mark the 10-year anniversary, Willow Beauty will host a special in-salon celebration on the evening of Thursday 26 March.

Clients and members of the public are invited to attend, with festivities including cake, retail discounts, spot prizes, and a birthday raffle.
Reflecting on the milestone, Gillian described reaching 10 years in business as a proud and emotional achievement, crediting the unwavering support of her husband and parents as key to her success.
With a loyal client base and the same passion that inspired its beginnings, Willow Beauty shows no signs of slowing down as it looks ahead to the future.
