Tennis Talent: 10-year-old Emma Mezei from Ballymena

A 10-year-old tennis player from Ballymena has secured a place among Ireland’s top young talents after qualifying for the prestigious AerCap Tennis Ireland Junior Kids Finals.

Emma Mezei, who trains at Ballymena Lawn Tennis Club, will compete at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin this August after finishing among the top eight junior players in Ireland through the national Road to Fitz qualifying series.

The achievement follows months of travelling across Ireland to compete against the country’s strongest young players, earning enough ranking points to qualify for one of the biggest junior events on the Tennis Ireland calendar.

National recognition

Emma learned of her qualification in an official email from Tennis Ireland, confirming she had earned her place in the finals, which take place from 20 to 22 August.

In the email, organisers congratulated Emma on her “outstanding achievement” and described the tournament as “a fantastic celebration of junior tennis”, bringing together the top eight qualifying players from across the country.

Further details about the event will be issued to competitors closer to the tournament.

Ballymena Lawn Tennis Club’s Director of Coaching, Barry Clarke, said Emma’s success reflects years of dedication from both the young player and the team supporting her development.

“I am the proudest coach right now to see Emma qualify for such a prestigious event.

“Emma attends all our sessions with a smile, full of energy and a willingness to learn and improve.

“It is a testament to Emma’s hard work, determination and drive to be able to qualify.

“She has been travelling up and down Ireland playing in competitions against the country’s best players.”

Clarke also praised Emma’s family and the wider coaching network that has supported her progress.

“To get Emma to where she is now takes a team who have the same vision and belief in Emma.

“I’d like to thank firstly her parents, Csaba and Ella, for trusting the club and the coaching team to play a part in Emma’s development.

“The entire Tennis Ulster and Tennis Ireland junior development and performance team have done a great job at inviting Emma to their junior training days.

“Also a thank you to Michael and the team at Windsor LTC for taking Emma on for one of their squads.”

Clarke said Emma’s qualification is not only a milestone for the player herself but also for the club and the wider town.

“To get to this level takes a lot of dedication and training with the best players and teams possible.

“It is a fantastic day for the club, which prides itself on promoting community tennis for everyone.

“To have a 10-year-old girl from Ballymena qualify for Ireland’s top junior event is great for the club and, more importantly, the town.”

Emma will now join the country’s other top young players when the AerCap Tennis Ireland Junior Kids Finals get under way in Dublin next month, marking another significant step in what is already proving to be a promising sporting journey.
