Asda has announced the return of its popular £1 ‘Winter Warmer’ café meal deal, designed to support people aged 60 and over through the colder months as many continue to face financial pressures.

From 1st November until the end of February, anyone aged 60 or above can enjoy a bowl of soup, a bread roll, and unlimited tea or coffee for just £1 at any of Asda’s 212 cafés across the UK.

Diners can choose between two soup flavours — Tomato or Chicken — offering a comforting and affordable way to stay warm this winter.

The supermarket says the initiative proved a lifeline for many older customers last year, with over half a million £1 meals served in 2024.

Asda’s Community Champions will also be encouraging local over-60s groups and individuals to visit their store cafés and use the Winter Warmer offer as a chance to socialise and connect with others in a welcoming setting.

The move comes as new figures highlight the ongoing problem of loneliness among older people during the festive season. Asda’s Christmas Community Tracker revealed that one in ten over-60s were unsure if they would speak to anyone between December 15th and January 1st, while another one in ten said they had gone to a supermarket just to talk to someone.

Jordan Cummings, Buying Manager for Cafes and Concessions at Asda, said:

“We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income.

“Last year alone we sold over half a million meals showing the vital need for this initiative. By bringing Winter Warmers back this November, we hope it will continue to be just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most, as well as offering a relaxed social environment to come and chat to others.”

The Winter Warmer deal forms part of Asda’s broader commitment to supporting communities and tackling social isolation. It follows other cost-of-living measures from the retailer, including budget-friendly meal offers, school holiday initiatives, and community café events.

For many older customers, the £1 meal is more than just affordable food — it’s a source of comfort, companionship, and community during one of the most challenging times of the year.
