The Police Service of Northern Ireland has named the young woman who died following a two-vehicle road traffic collision in Kilkeel as 24-year-old Aoife Tinnelly from the local area.


The fatal crash occurred on the Newry Road on Monday evening, April 20, with emergency services called to the scene shortly before 6.30pm.



PSNI confirm identity of victim


In an update issued on Tuesday, the PSNI confirmed the identity of the woman who died in the collision. Aoife Tinnelly, aged 24, was from the Kilkeel area.


Details of the collision


Detective Inspector Stewart from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit outlined the circumstances surrounding the incident.


“Shortly before 6.30pm, we received a report of a collision involving a white Audi A1 and blue Mercedes Benz on the Newry Road,” he said.



“Officers alongside colleagues from other emergency services attended, however very sadly Aoife was pronounced deceased at the scene.”


Two others injured


Police confirmed that two other people were injured in the collision.


“Two other people were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries,” Detective Inspector Stewart added.


No further details on their conditions have been released.



Road closure and reopening


The Newry Road was closed for a number of hours following the collision to allow emergency services to deal with the incident and for investigators to examine the scene.


It has since fully reopened to traffic.


Ongoing investigation and appeal for information


Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are continuing, with police appealing to the public for assistance.



Detective Inspector Stewart said:


“Our enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or to anyone who may have CCTV, dash-cam or other footage that could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 1288 20/04/26.”


Police have urged anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
