Speeding motorists and parking problems on a busy Antrim road have led to fresh calls for action, as local residents and road users voice growing concerns about safety.
The Antrim Neighbourhood Policing Team recently joined South Antrim MP Robin Swann on the Randalstown Road, where they discussed potential measures to tackle persistent issues with traffic in the area.
The stretch of road, which carries a 30mph speed limit, has long been a source of frustration for residents who say drivers regularly exceed the limit, creating risks for pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists.
Local people have also raised concerns about parking in the area.
Meeting on the ground
Robin Swann MP, who has been engaging with constituents on the matter, said the meeting was an important opportunity to work directly with police officers on site.
“Thanks to Police Antrim & Newtownabbey for joining me at the Randalstown Road this morning to discuss traffic calming measures and what can be done to address parking concerns from residents and speeding on the road,” he said.
Discussions focused on how best to enforce the 30mph speed limit and whether additional measures, such as traffic calming schemes, signage or targeted enforcement, could be introduced to improve compliance.
Community impact
Residents have reported that excessive speeding has become a regular occurrence, particularly during peak travel times. Parents walking children to school and older residents crossing the road have expressed fears about safety, with some warning that it is “only a matter of time” before a serious accident occurs.
Police commitment
The Antrim Neighbourhood Policing Team has confirmed that it will continue to work alongside elected representatives and local communities to address the issue. Officers say they are committed to tackling speeding and will explore a range of enforcement and preventative options.
This approach is part of a wider strategy across Antrim and Newtownabbey to improve road safety, particularly in areas where residents have raised repeated concerns.
