As schools across Northern Ireland prepare to reopen on Monday 1st September, Translink has issued essential travel advice to help pupils, parents, and guardians ensure a safe and smooth start to the new academic year.
With more than 60,000 pupils relying on Translink’s bus and rail services every day, the public transport operator is urging passengers to plan ahead, check timetables, and stay alert when travelling during one of the busiest periods of the year.
David Cowan, Translink’s Director of Commercial Operations, said:
“We realise the start of the new school term can be both exciting and daunting, so we want to help ease any pressures with safe, comfortable services and great value ticket options that offer pupils more freedom and independence.”
Translink continues to work closely with the Education Authority (EA) to ensure services are ready for the return to classrooms. Parents and pupils are advised to make use of the Journey Planner app or visit translink.co.uk/schoolservices to confirm timetables and plan journeys in advance.
Ticketing and Smartpass reminders
Students eligible for the EA Smartpass are reminded to ‘tap to travel’ for ease and convenience. For those not eligible, Translink provides a range of everyday value ticket options.
Pupils entering Year 13 can also apply for a free yLink card, available to 16–23-year-olds, which offers 50% off bus and rail travel across Northern Ireland.
Passenger safety and climate action
Translink is appealing for heightened awareness when boarding and exiting buses and trains. The use of mobile phones and headphones can increase risks, particularly near roads, stairs, and platforms.
Mr Cowan added:
“We also know that many young people are leading the way in calling for climate action. Travelling by public transport today in Northern Ireland is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s also a healthier and more active way to travel and helps reduce congestion.”
Niall McKinley, Head of Service, Transport at the Education Authority, also welcomed the return:
“We’re looking forward to welcoming pupils back and playing our part in supporting their educational journey. Using public transport not only offers a safe and cost-effective way to travel, but also helps children build independence and social skills, while reducing congestion at peak times.”
Patience urged as term begins
Translink is asking all passengers to allow extra time for travel in the first weeks of term, as patterns settle and services adjust to higher demand.
