47 new NIFRS vehicles to strengthen emergency response across Northern Ireland

Forty-seven new fire appliances and specialist vehicles are being introduced across Northern Ireland as part of a fleet investment worth more than £16 million.

The major upgrade includes £11 million for 31 new fire appliances, providing crews with modern equipment designed to improve emergency response, firefighter safety and operational reliability.

However, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service has not yet confirmed which stations will receive the new appliances, or whether any will be based in Ballymena or the surrounding area.

Safer and more reliable vehicles

The vehicles will be deployed to fire stations across Northern Ireland as NIFRS replaces and strengthens parts of its operational fleet.

They feature upgraded technology intended to help crews respond more effectively while improving welfare and safety at incidents.

New measures have also been incorporated to manage contaminants and reduce firefighters’ exposure to potentially harmful substances carried back from emergency scenes.

Health Minister Robbie Butler said:

“This major investment ensures fire crews have access to reliable, modern vehicles, equipping them to respond quickly and effectively when communities need them most.

“These modern appliances will help fire crews meet the demands of the increasingly complex challenges they face every day and have been designed with safety, resilience and efficiency at their core, providing crews with the tools they need to protect people, property and the environment.

“Importantly, the vehicles also incorporate measures to support firefighter health and wellbeing, including enhanced arrangements for managing operational contaminants and reducing exposure to harmful substances.

“This investment demonstrates our commitment not only to maintaining an effective emergency response service, but also to protecting the wellbeing of the firefighters who serve our communities.”

Three command units due next year

The investment also covers three new Command Support Units, which are expected to enter frontline service next year.

These specialist vehicles are used to help coordinate firefighters, resources and information during major or complex incidents.

NIFRS Chief Fire & Rescue Officer Aidan Jennings said the wider fleet upgrade would strengthen emergency response and reduce pressure caused by maintaining older vehicles.

He said:

“We thank Minister Butler for supporting this significant investment in the operational resilience of our service.

“The new Fire Appliances and specialist vehicles strengthen our emergency response, reduce maintenance pressures and ensure our firefighters are equipped with leading-edge resources to meet the challenges and demands on our service, when responding to incidents.

“This investment is also about our people and our ability to ensure that they have the right resources to continue to deliver a professional and effective emergency response to communities across Northern Ireland.”

The rollout will benefit NIFRS operations across Northern Ireland, although the service has not provided a station-by-station allocation or confirmed when all 47 vehicles will enter service. Those details will determine what the investment means directly for communities served by Ballymena and other local fire stations.
