An 11-year-old boy has died following a road traffic collision in Co Down, police have confirmed.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the fatal incident occurred on Tuesday 3 February on the Corcreaghan Road in Kilkeel, and involved a car and a child.

Emergency services were alerted to the collision shortly after 8am. Despite the efforts of police officers and paramedics, the young boy was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Detective Inspector Stewart from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit described the circumstances surrounding the incident and confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

“Police received a report at approximately 8am of a collision involving a car and a child on the Corcreaghan Road,” he said.

“Officers attended, alongside our colleagues from partner emergency services. Tragically, the young boy was pronounced deceased a short time later in hospital.”

The boy’s death has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents expressing sadness and concern over road safety in the area. The incident occurred during the morning period when families and children are often travelling to school, adding to the sense of loss felt locally.

Detectives are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision and are urging anyone who may have information to come forward.

“Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision, and would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam or other footage which could assist with our enquiries,” Detective Inspector Stewart added.
