Young man dies and driver arrested after Co Fermanagh collision

A 21-year-old man has died following a single-vehicle road traffic collision in Maguiresbridge in the early hours of Friday morning.

The victim has been named as Shane Caulfield, who was from the Portadown area.

Police said the collision occurred at approximately 1.30am on Friday, June 26, on the Belfast Road in Maguiresbridge and involved a grey Volkswagen Golf.

Victim pronounced dead at the scene

Detective Inspector Stewart from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit said officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from other emergency services following reports of the crash.

A male driver and a female passenger in the vehicle received medical treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Police said their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this stage.

Sadly, a second passenger, Mr Caulfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Driver arrested following collision

The driver of the vehicle has since been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences connected to the incident.

Police have not released details of the offences at this stage and enquiries remain ongoing.

The Belfast Road was closed in both directions while collision investigators examined the scene and carried out recovery work.

The road has since fully reopened to traffic.

Appeal for witnesses and dash-cam footage

Investigators are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who was travelling in the area around the time and captured footage on a dash-cam to come forward.
