Motorists and commuters across Northern Ireland are being urged to prepare for difficult travel conditions on Thursday morning as strong winds and heavy rain sweep across the region.

A yellow weather warning has been issued covering the period from 6:00am to 12:00pm on Thursday, 12 March 2026, with forecasters warning that gusty winds combined with heavy rain could disrupt morning journeys.

Gusts of up to 60mph possible

Southwesterly winds are expected to strengthen during the early hours, with gusts of 40 to 50mph forecast across much of Northern Ireland.

During the peak of the weather system, many areas could briefly see gusts reaching between 50 and 60mph, accompanied by a spell of heavy rain.

The combination of strong winds and rain is expected to make travel conditions particularly challenging, especially during the morning commute.

Conditions expected to improve later in the morning

Forecasters say the strongest winds should begin to ease from the west during the late morning, gradually bringing an improvement in conditions as the weather system moves through.

However, the early hours of Thursday are likely to bring the most disruption, with drivers advised to take extra care on exposed routes.
