A yellow weather warning has been issued for Northern Ireland, with forecasters warning that heavy showers and thunderstorms could bring disruption to parts of the region on Friday morning.
The Met Office warning comes into effect from 12:00am until 10:00am on Friday, 26 June 2026, with the potential for intense downpours, hail and frequent lightning where storms develop.
While not every area will be affected, the Met Office says some places could experience sudden bursts of severe weather capable of causing localised disruption during the morning commute.
Heavy downpours could develop quickly
According to the forecast, a number of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to move northwards across parts of Northern Ireland during Friday morning.
Where storms occur, rainfall totals of 15–20mm could fall in less than an hour, enough to overwhelm drains in some locations and create surface water on roads.
The Met Office also warns that hail and frequent lightning are likely to accompany the strongest showers, increasing the risk of hazardous travel conditions in affected areas.
As with many thunderstorm events, the weather is expected to be highly localised, meaning some communities may remain dry while others experience torrential rain over a short period.
Drivers urged to take extra care
Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys on Friday morning, particularly if travelling through areas affected by heavy showers.
Reduced visibility, standing water and sudden changes in road conditions could make driving more difficult, while lightning and hail may add to the hazards.
Short-lived but potentially disruptive
Although the warning is due to expire at 10:00am on Friday, the Met Office says the most intense showers could still cause short-term disruption where they develop.
