Yellow thunderstorm warning issued for Northern Ireland as heavy downpours, hail and strong winds forecast

People across Northern Ireland are advised to expect potentially disruptive weather after the Met Office issued a yellow thunderstorm warning covering the entire region for Tuesday.

The warning comes into effect from 12 noon until 9pm on Tuesday, August 4, with forecasters warning that slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms could cause disruption to travel and outdoor activities.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected

According to the Met Office, showers will begin developing during Tuesday morning before becoming heavier and more widespread through the afternoon.

While not every area will be affected, those that are could experience intense downpours, with 20-30mm of rain falling within just one or two hours.

The heaviest showers may also bring strong, gusty winds and hail, increasing the risk of localised disruption.

Travel and events could be affected

The Met Office says the unsettled conditions could lead to disruption to transport and outdoor events during the afternoon and early evening.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys as heavy rain can quickly reduce visibility and lead to surface water on roads. Organisers of outdoor events may also need to monitor the latest forecasts as conditions develop.

Conditions expected to improve later

The showers are forecast to gradually ease from the west during the evening, with the warning due to expire at 9pm.

As with many summer thunderstorms, the Met Office says the heaviest downpours are likely to be very localised, meaning some places may escape with little or no rain while neighbouring areas experience torrential showers.

Residents are encouraged to keep up to date with the latest forecast throughout Tuesday and take extra care if travelling or spending time outdoors.
