Yellow rain warning issued as heavy downpours set to hit Northern Ireland

A yellow weather warning has come into force across most of Northern Ireland this morning, with heavy rain expected to bring difficult travelling conditions in places.
The Met Office warning is in force from 8.30am until 2pm today, Sunday 27 September, and covers every county except Fermanagh.
Up to 40mm possible in a few hours
Rain is expected to become heavy at times during the morning, with some locations potentially receiving between 20mm and 40mm in just a few hours.
The Met Office has warned that the volume of rain falling over a relatively short period could lead to disruption on the roads and difficult travelling conditions for a time.
Its latest Northern Ireland forecast says widespread rain, heavy at times, will affect the region this morning before drier and brighter weather begins spreading in from the west during the afternoon.
Ballymena set for a wet morning
In Ballymena, rain is already falling this morning, with the heaviest and most persistent conditions expected through the morning and into lunchtime before the risk drops significantly during the afternoon.
Motorists heading out are being advised to allow additional time for journeys and be prepared for potentially difficult conditions where the heaviest rain develops.
Yellow warnings are issued when severe weather has the potential to cause impacts, which can include disruption to travel in some areas. The Met Office advises people to check the detail of individual warnings and keep up to date with the latest forecast.
Conditions improve this afternoon
The worst of today’s rain should be relatively short-lived, with drier and brighter conditions spreading eastwards as the weather system clears. Temperatures are expected to reach around 15°C.
Strong southeasterly winds are also forecast along exposed parts of Northern Ireland’s east coast, but tonight is expected to become largely dry with some lengthy clear periods and temperatures falling to around 8°C.
Monday should bring a significant improvement, with the Met Office forecasting a dry day across Northern Ireland with sunny spells and temperatures reaching around 17°C.
