Visit Armagh has launched a nationwide search for one adventurous family to become the official ‘Family Explorer’ for the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon region, in a new competition designed to spotlight the area’s top family-friendly experiences.
Timed perfectly for summer, the campaign invites families with children aged 16 and under to apply by sharing in 100 words or less why they should be selected. Entries can be submitted online via visitarmagh.com/familyexplorer before the deadline on 18 May.
The winning family will be treated to a series of unforgettable experiences across Northern Ireland’s Orchard County, beginning with a stay at Tepee Valley – a unique glamping site set amid rolling countryside.
From there, their bespoke itinerary includes VIP access to some of the region’s standout attractions, such as the internationally renowned Armagh Observatory and Planetarium – the only one of its kind on the island of Ireland – and an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Tayto Castle in Tandragee, home of the iconic crisp brand.
Over the course of 2025, the family will be invited to attend a packed calendar of seasonal festivals and events. These include the much-loved Georgian Festival, where Armagh’s 18th-century streets come alive with family activities and festive markets; the Food and Cider Festival, celebrating the area’s award-winning produce – notably the PGI-certified Armagh Bramley apple – and the return of the Wickerman event in August, a vibrant Lughnasa celebration featuring music, crafts and storytelling.
Sara McGeary, Tourism Manager at Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, said the initiative is part of a wider commitment to developing memorable, family-centred tourism.
“As a region, we’ve made it a priority to invest in experiences that speak directly to families – not just as visitors, but as a core part of our tourism proposition,” she said.
“This competition is just one example of how we’re bringing that to life, offering a chance to experience the very best of what Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon has to offer. Our aim is simple: to create meaningful, accessible experiences that don’t have to come with a hefty price tag.”
Among the region’s newest attractions are immersive heritage experiences, from learning about the ancient sport of road bowling in Armagh City to exploring Dan Winter’s Cottage, one of Ireland’s oldest thatched homes, where families can engage with traditional weaving.
Young explorers can also enjoy a brand-new activity sheet packed with educational content, while outdoor-loving families can discover orchard tours, alfresco cooking, and adventure trails at Gosford Forest Park. Moo Valley Artisan Gelato also offers hands-on farm-to-table tastings for sweet-toothed visitors.
Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, Councillor Sarah Duffy, echoed the excitement around the competition and the region’s family appeal.
“Summer is one of the most exciting times to visit our borough – the energy, the colour, and the sense of welcome are second to none,” she said.
“We see families returning year after year because they know they’ll find something special here. Whether that’s stepping behind the scenes at the Game of Thrones Studio Tour, delving into ancient myths at Navan Centre & Fort, or indulging in some retail therapy at The Boulevard, we truly believe this is the best place on the island for a family escape.”
Families keen to explore the region while enjoying VIP experiences are encouraged to submit their applications online at visitarmagh.com/familyexplorer. Terms and conditions apply.
