38-year-old James Oakes
A 38-year-old man from Greenisland has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for a sustained and brutal campaign of domestic abuse, following a hearing at Belfast Crown Court today, Friday 13th June.
James Oakes pleaded guilty to a staggering 43 counts related to domestic abuse offences, including grievous bodily harm, actual bodily harm, common assault, criminal damage and threats to kill.
As part of his sentence, Oakes will serve at least five and a half years in custody before being considered for release.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) welcomed the sentence, which concludes a harrowing case that saw the victim subjected to years of violence and coercive control.
Detective Constable Gavin Harvey described the abuse as both “significant and prolonged,” with incidents spanning six years from December 2014 to December 2020.
“Oakes is a violent, cold and calculating man who exerted control over his victim for many years through fear,” said Detective Constable Harvey.
The court heard harrowing details of repeated and escalating violence. The victim endured beatings including punches, kicks, and strangulation. In one horrific incident, Oakes extinguished a cigarette on her face. On another occasion, he attacked her with a hammer, striking her hands, arms, and stomach.
She was further threatened with an axe and hit with a metal log holder, causing injuries to her arms, legs, and a laceration to her head. In one of the most disturbing threats, he began digging a hole in her garden, telling her he was “digging her grave.”
Detective Constable Harvey added:
“It is shocking the abuse he subjected his victim to over such a prolonged period of time, no one should have to live like that.”
He praised the courage and perseverance of the victim, saying:
“It is incredibly brave that the victim in this case reported and saw this case through the criminal justice process to get to sentencing today. She pushed through the fear barrier he built around her and fought for justice.”
The PSNI reiterated its commitment to supporting victims of domestic abuse and urged anyone affected to seek help.
“Domestic abuse can happen to anyone and it is unacceptable,” said Detective Constable Harvey.
