Police are investigating a suspected hate crime after the Orange Arch erected by Cairncastle LOL 692 was targeted by vandals in the early hours of Friday morning.

According to the Lodge, two men were seen interfering with the structure around 2.30am. The perpetrators reportedly pulled out two heavy wire stay ropes supporting the arch, and also damaged bunting surrounding the site.

The incident was interrupted when a bystander disturbed the individuals and gave chase.

A spokesperson for Cairncastle LOL 692 commented:

“Early this morning when we were all starting work we were informed that two men had pulled out two heavy wire stay ropes from our Lodge Arch in the early hours of the morning round 2.30am. Also some of the bunting had been pulled at. We thank the person who disturbed them and gave chase as dear knows their intentions if they hadn’t been disturbed.”

The Lodge confirmed the matter has been reported to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and urged anyone with information to come forward, either by contacting the police directly or messaging their page in private.

“This hate crime has been reported to the Police. Anyone with any information please send our page a private message or contact the Police.”

Despite the incident, members of the Lodge said the act of vandalism has strengthened their resolve.

“This has brought our members even more together and made us even more determined to do our best for our Lodge. We will continue to promote our heritage and culture and continue to have our Arch proudly erected in Cairncastle village next year as we do every year.”

A photograph shared by the Lodge shows some of the bunting which is to be reattached to the arch structure.

East Antrim Alliance MLA Danny Donnelly also condemned the attack, stating:

“Sorry to hear about attempted vandalism on the orange arch at Cairncastle. People should be able to celebrate their culture without it being attacked. There is no place for hate crimes in a peaceful society. If anyone has any info on who is responsible please pass it on to PSNI.”
