Man suffers deep facial wounds in suspected blade assault in Antrim

A man has required hospital treatment after suffering a suspected blade wound to his face during an altercation in Antrim town centre.

Police said the man, aged in his 30s, sustained two deep lacerations during the incident in the High Street area on Tuesday evening, 8 September.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and remained in police custody as enquiries continued.

Police investigate possible altercation inside van

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses as they work to establish exactly what happened, including whether an earlier altercation took place inside a white Ford van.

Detective Sergeant Crothers said:

“We received a report at approximately 7.30pm on Tuesday evening, 8th September of an altercation involving two men in the High Street area.

“We’re also investigating the possibility that an altercation may have occurred between the two men inside a white Ford van in the area – prior to it moving onto the street.

“One of the men, aged in his 30s, sustained a slash wound to his face – believed to have been caused by a blade – resulting in two deep lacerations that required hospital treatment.

“On officers’ arrival, a 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in custody at this time as enquiries continue.

“We would be particularly interested in speaking to anyone who was in the High Street area of the town around 7.30pm who may have witnessed this fight.”

Appeal for footage

Detectives are particularly keen to obtain any dash-cam, CCTV or mobile phone footage which could assist their investigation.
