Two teenage boys have been charged with attempted rape following a serious sexual assault on a teenage girl in the Clonavon Terrace area of Ballymena on Saturday evening, 7th June.

Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Public Protection Branch confirmed the boys will appear before Coleraine Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 9th June.

The incident reportedly occurred between 7.30pm and 10.30pm on Saturday night, prompting a swift police response and subsequent arrests.

Detective Inspector Olphert stated:

“This serious sexual assault occurred yesterday, Saturday 7th June, in the Clonavon Terrace area sometime between 7.30pm and 10.30pm.

“Two teenage boys have since been arrested in connection with the investigation, and are being questioned in custody.”

The girl, who was left “extremely distressed and traumatised”, is being supported by specialist officers.

Inspector Olphert continued:

“Specialist officers are continuing to support the girl who has been left extremely distressed and traumatised by what has happened.

“We would reiterate to the public not to speculate or share information on social media – this is not helpful towards the ongoing investigation.”

An appeal has been launched for information, with police urging anyone who was in the Clonavon Terrace or Waveney Road areas on Saturday evening and may have witnessed suspicious activity to come forward.

“If you were in the Clonavon Terrace or Waveney Road area yesterday evening, and witnessed what happened or noticed anything suspicious, please make contact with police on 101, quoting reference number 1522 07/06/25,” said Detective Inspector Olphert.

Reports can also be submitted via the PSNI online reporting portal, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online.

As is standard, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

The investigation remains ongoing.
