Police have arrested a man following a reported assault in the Drumtara area of Ballymena earlier today (Tuesday, December 23).

Officers attended the scene shortly after a report of an altercation involving two men was received mid-morning. Emergency services were called as a precaution, with both men requiring hospital treatment for their injuries.

Detective Sergeant Crothers said:

“Shortly after 10.30am, officers received a report of two men involved in an altercation in the area.

“Colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service also attended the scene, and administered medical treatment, before both men were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries.

“One man aged in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, and possession of an offensive weapon with intent.

“He remains in custody, assisting with police enquiries.”

The incident prompted a visible police and ambulance presence in the residential area, causing concern among local residents as emergency crews worked at the scene.

Police have not confirmed the extent of the injuries sustained by either man, nor whether they were known to each other.

Enquiries are ongoing, and officers are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
