Two men sentenced over Ballymena riot after police attacked with fireworks and masonry

Two men have received custodial sentences for their involvement in serious disorder in Ballymena during which bottles, masonry and fireworks were thrown at police.
Stephen Ritchie, 28, from Bangor was sentenced at Antrim Crown Court on Friday to 34 months, with 12 months to be served in custody and the remainder on licence, after being convicted of riot.
Joel Gordon, 21, also from Bangor, was sentenced to four years, with half to be served in custody and the remainder on licence, for riot.
Disorder at Harryville Bridge and Bridge Street
Both men were identified as having taken part in serious disorder in the area of Harryville Bridge and Bridge Street on 11 June 2025.
Police said a large crowd, which included Ritchie and Gordon, threw bottles and masonry at officers. Gordon was also seen igniting a firework and firing it in the direction of police.
An image of Gordon was subsequently included in the PSNI’s Operation Exposure public appeal and he was identified as having been involved in the riot.
Police describe “shameful scenes”
Detective Chief Inspector Michael O’Loan said:
“In shameful scenes, there was large-scale disorder by people intent on causing harm. Damage was caused to roads, homes, cars and local business premises with people left fearing for their lives.
“Our officers came under attack and many left injured after petrol bombs, heavy masonry and fireworks were thrown at them.
“At the time, we assured the public that we will work tirelessly to restore calm and ensure that anyone who chooses to take part in this criminality is brought to justice.
“Our dedicated investigation team has worked tirelessly to ensure that those involved are prosecuted – today’s sentencings are two of many over this disorder.
“We would also repeat our appeal to anyone who has been the victim of, or has any information on, any crime to contact police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. We can assure you that we will always act on concerns and information we receive.”
Investigation into disorder continues
The two sentences are the latest court outcomes arising from the investigation into the serious disorder which affected Ballymena in June 2025. Police previously confirmed that 53 arrests had been made in connection with the rioting by 30 July 2025.
