Two men arrested after deliberate fire at Cookstown property

Two men have been arrested following a suspected arson attack at a vacant property in Cookstown in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police were called to Coolnafranky Park at around 2.45am after receiving a report that a property was on fire.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service crews were already at the scene when officers arrived and worked to extinguish the blaze.

No one was inside the property at the time and no injuries were reported.

The fire was contained to the living room, although adjoining rooms sustained smoke damage.

Suspects located a short time later

Police said officers located two suspects a short time after the fire.

Following a stop and search, a number of items were seized.

Two men, aged 20 and 19, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of offences including arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered.

Both remained in police custody on Monday morning.

Police are treating the fire as a deliberate ignition and enquiries are continuing.

Police appeal for footage

Anyone who was in the Coolnafranky Park area during the early hours of Monday, or who may have information about the incident, is being asked to contact police.

Officers are particularly interested in Ring doorbell or other footage which could assist their investigation.
