Two killed in Upper Ballinderry collision as PSNI launch urgent witness appeal

Two people have died following a devastating two-vehicle collision in the Lisburn area on Saturday evening, prompting an active police investigation and a renewed appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage.


The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that the fatal crash occurred shortly before 6pm on Saturday, 25 April, on the Glenavy Road in Upper Ballinderry, involving a motorcycle and a car.



Emergency services, including officers, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, were dispatched to the scene.


Despite their efforts, both drivers – the rider of the motorcycle and the driver of the car – were pronounced dead at the scene.


A third person was injured in the collision and taken to hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.



Emergency response and road closure


The serious nature of the incident led to the Glenavy Road being closed for a period of time between the junctions of Soldierstown Road and Hammonds Road as emergency services worked at the scene and collision investigators carried out initial examinations.


The road has since reopened to traffic.


Police investigation underway


Detective Inspector Dave Stewart, from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit, confirmed that enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.



He said:


“Police received a report shortly before 6pm on Saturday of a collision involving a motorcycle and a car in the Glenavy Road area of Upper Ballinderry.


“Officers, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, attended, however, sadly, two people – the drivers of both vehicles – were pronounced deceased at the scene.


“Another person was taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries.


“The road, which was closed for a time between the junctions of Soldierstown Road and Hammonds Road, has since reopened.


“Our enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have digital footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 1142 of 25/06/26.”



Appeal for witnesses and information


Police are urging anyone who may have been in the area at the time, particularly motorists with dashcam footage, to come forward as they work to establish the full circumstances of the fatal collision.
