TV | Murder In The Badlands: Arlene Arkinson

Four decades. Four innocent young women. Four brutal murders. Lisa Dorrian, Inga Maria Hauser, Arlene Arkinson and Marian Beattie are names that have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, and whose lives were each brutally cut short.

Murder In The Badlands, a new four part series for BBC Northern Ireland television, forensically rebuilds the timeline of these murders and the investigations that followed.

The series features insights from surviving family members, police officers, journalists and criminologists.

The third episode looks at the circumstances surrounding the death of Tyrone teenager, Arlene Arkinson.

The 15-year old disappeared in August 1994 after a night out with friends in Bundoran, County Donegal. Arlene’s remains are still undiscovered, but are thought to have been buried in a large area of bogland and forestry along the border.

Arlene’s case is recounted by her sister Kathleen Arkinson, who waved to her as she left home on the evening of her disappearance.

The programme also includes interviews with the Arkinson family’s solicitor, Des Doherty and Colin Murray, a former detective with the Kent Police who was involved in the investigation.

The preceding episodes in the series examined the unsolved murder cases of Inga Maria Hauser, an 18 year old tourist from Munich, whose body was discovered in a remote part of Ballypatrick Forest in 1988 and Lisa Dorrian, a 25-year-old shop assistant from Bangor, County Down, who was last seen at a party in a caravan park in Ballyhalbert in 2005.

Both episodes are available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.

The concluding episode in the series will deal with the murder of 18-year-old Marian Beattie. Her body was found at the foot of a cliff in a quarry at the end of narrow country road in Aughnacloy in 1973.
