George Mitchell, 48, from Harryville, Ballymena
Tributes have been paid to Ballymena man George Mitchell, who tragically died in a house fire at his home on Boxing Day.
Mr Mitchell, aged 48, lost his life in the incident at a property on Waring Street, which occurred on Friday 26 December.
Emergency services attended the scene, but he was sadly pronounced dead at the property. Police have confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious and enquiries into the circumstances of the fire remain ongoing.
In the days following the tragedy, heartfelt tributes have been shared by family and friends, reflecting on the devastating loss felt across the community.
A funeral notice published by Alan Francey Funeral Services described Mr Mitchell as a devoted family man and much-loved husband, father and son.
The notice stated:
“MITCHELL, George Ernest, aged 48 years, passed away 26th December 2025, tragically at his home in Waring Street, Ballymena. Much loved husband of Mary, loving dad of Rhys, Kayla, Leah, Courtney and Travis, cherished son of Geoffrey Mitchell and the late Barbara, devoted brother of Beryl, Geoffrey, Stephanie and the late Richard, a loving uncle, nephew and cousin.”
The notice added that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course, with family and friends welcome to call at the home of his father, Geoffrey.
It continued:
“Funeral arrangements to follow.
“Family and friends are welcome to call at his father Geoffrey’s home.”
In lieu of flowers, the family has invited donations in George’s memory to a charity closely associated with emergency services.
The notice said:
“Flowers are welcomed but if desired donations in memory of George to The Fire Fighters Charity C/o Alan Francey Funeral Services 94 Toome Road, Ballymena, BT42 2BU or online by card at www.franceyfunerals.com”
Paying tribute to his lasting legacy within his family, the notice concluded:
“George will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his entire family circle.”
“‘Peace is yours, memories ours.’
‘Gone but never forgotten.’”
George’s death has prompted renewed calls from emergency services for households to ensure fire safety measures are in place, including working smoke alarms and clear escape plans, particularly during the winter period.
