The only way is up? Utility Regulator commences review of Power NI’s electricity tariff

The Utility Regulator yesterday announced (Tuesday 10 May) that a formal review of Power NI’s regulated electricity tariff has now commenced.

The Utility Regulator regulates the electricity prices for Power NI’s domestic customers.

As part of the regulation process the statutory body continuously monitors the components that make up the regulated electricity tariff and then approve any resulting change when necessary.

With global prices for wholesale oil and gas surging, both Budget Energy and SSE Airtricity have announced price hikes in recent weeks for Northern Ireland consumers.

Budget is set to increase prices for domestic customers by 27% from Friday 27 May 2022, while SSE Airtricity, Northern Ireland’s second largest electricity supplier, will raise it’s prices by 33% for hard-pressed consumers, from 1 June 2022.

The Utility Regulator said it is expected that the review will conclude shortly, with an announcement to follow soon after.
