The Merchant announced as Top 40 UK finalist for Fish & Chip Takeaway of the Year 2023

The National Fish and Chip Awards has announced the top 40 entries for the Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year category and The Merchant Fish & Chip Shop, Ballymena, has made the cut.

The announcement came after a rigorous judging process, and The Merchant joins the only other Northern Ireland chippy, Chipmongers Portstewart, in the Top 40 list in the running for the prestigious accolade.

Judging criteria included having to demonstrate high levels of knowledge of the Fish & Chip industry including customer service, and environmental and sustainably good practices.

The shortlisting is the latest well-deserved recognition for the local eatery, whose boss, Terry Scullion, has led the way for many years in Ballymena with delicious takeaway food, made using the best local produce.

Last year Terry and his team lifted two coveted titles in The Northern Ireland Fish and Chip Shop Awards. The Merchant was crowned winner in both Best in County Antrim, and Best Overall in Northern Ireland categories!

The National Fish and Chip Awards has been celebrating the nation’s favourite dish for more than 30 years, recognising and rewarding the people and businesses who provide us with the best fish and chips across the UK, both in terms of food and service.

Commenting on the top 40 shortlist, Andrew Crook, President at The National Federation of Fish Friers said:

“Being able to announce the top 40 finalists for this category is an absolute pleasure. It is no secret that the industry are facing some challenges.

“That said, this industry is built upon British stoicism. And with spirit and determination we are committed to supporting our members and seeing through tough times. We cannot wait to celebrate at the awards ceremony in February 2023.”

The National Federation of Fish Friers is proud to have been passed over the baton from Seafish as custodians of this prestigious event, hosting the inaugural awards at the Park Plaza Hotel in London on the 28th February 2023.

The winner will be unveiled at the Awards Ceremony held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on the 28th of February 2023
