Teenager charged with murder and two attempted murders following Dungannon death

A 16-year-old male has been charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and threats to kill following the death of a 61-year-old man at a home in Dungannon.

Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team confirmed the teenager is due to appear before Omagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 1 September.

The charges follow an incident at a house in the Lisnahull Road area of Dungannon on Saturday 29 August, in which a man died and his wife and eight-year-old daughter were injured.

Police had been called to the property shortly after 10.55am on Saturday following a report from a member of the public of an ongoing disturbance.

Officers discovered the body of the 61-year-old man inside the home, along with his 48-year-old wife, who had sustained non-life threatening injuries, and their severely injured eight-year-old daughter.

The teenager was arrested at the scene and had remained in police custody while detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police confirmed on Monday night that he has now been charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and threats to kill.

He is due to appear before Omagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

Eight-year-old girl now stable

Earlier on Monday, police confirmed that the eight-year-old girl was in a stable condition in hospital after previously being described as critically ill.

Mid Ulster District Commander Superintendent Peter Stevenson said officers who arrived at the house immediately began providing first aid to the woman and girl.

He said:

“Our officers immediately commenced first aid on the woman and girl – and I am in no doubt that their quick-thinking actions gave the young girl a fighting chance of survival. She is now in a stable condition in hospital.”

The woman sustained non-life threatening injuries and was subsequently released from hospital.

Police have said they do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the public and are not seeking anyone else in connection with the investigation.

The case will now come before Omagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 1 September, when the 16-year-old is expected to make his first appearance on the charges.
