The quiet work of volunteers helping individuals and families through hardship was recognised at a special Mass in Ballymena, where St Vincent de Paul members gathered from across the charity’s North Region.

A large congregation attended All Saints’ Church to mark the Feast Day of St Vincent de Paul, with the support volunteers provide through practical help, listening and friendship at the heart of the celebration.

Families facing impossible choices

Newly elected North Region President Anne Irwin said volunteers’ support extended beyond the material assistance provided through the charity’s Home Visitation work.

“Many of our SVP members listen to and befriend individuals and families who are navigating difficult times and especially at this time of year, are faced with impossible choices.”

Attending her first Feast Day Mass as Regional President, she also recognised the commitment of those giving their time to help others.

“I would commend our volunteers for their deep-rooted dedication and commitment to the Society of St Vincent de Paul, as I know that their involvement extends far beyond providing material assistance during our core work of Home Visitation.”

Fr Perry Gildea CM celebrated the Mass and used his homily to reflect on the compassion and commitment of members whose support for people experiencing hardship often goes unrecognised.

Drawing on the life and legacy of St Vincent de Paul, he linked that example of service with the work of today’s volunteers in treating people with dignity and care.

Finding help or becoming a volunteer

SVP is an international charity which supports people experiencing poverty and social exclusion across communities, regardless of their background. Its work also seeks to help people become self-sufficient and address the conditions that contribute to hardship.
